Fans call Disney’s Tinker Bell casting for upcoming “Peter Pan & Wendy” “racist”

Disney’s decision to cast Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell for their upcoming “Peter Pan & Wendy” live-action flick, rather than create a new character of color, has caused uproar on Twitter – as if anyone is surprised. Fans got their first glimpse of the beloved pixie on Tuesday, and not everyone is pleased.
Tinker Bell has historically been represented as a white girl with blonde hair and blue eyes, so it’s no surprise that some are criticising the change. This isn’t the first time Disney has cast a black actress in a traditionally white role – the same happened with “The Little Mermaid” and Halle Bailey as Ariel.
The movie’s due out in April and it appears that Disney may have to brace themselves for the reactions it will draw. However, there is no shortage of Twitter users willing to offer their casting suggestions; many are claiming that former Disney Channel star Dove Cameron would have been perfect for the role.
