With each passing year, our society seems to become busier and busier. We have more to do at work, our responsibilities at home increase, and our social calendars fill up faster. We don’t have enough hours in the day as it is, so how could we prioritize adequate rest? Well, as difficult as it may seem, rest is impossible to ignore. Here is why breaks and days off are so important:

1. Rest increases focus.

When we’re rested instead of tired or groggy, we focus better. Our minds are clearer. This makes everything we do faster and easier.

2. Rest increases efficiency.

Since you focus better when you’re rested, you’re able to get more done in the same amount of time. It feels good to have more tasks checked off your to-do list, and you’ll end up with more time for yourself.

3. Rest decreases burnout.

The quickest way to get burned out from your job or responsibilities is chronic exhaustion. Taking regular breaks is good for your relationship with you career. Plan and prioritize your breaks with the long-term effects in mind.

4. Rest keeps you healthy.

Work-life balance is good for you on a physiological level. You need it to recover from the day, and if you don’t get enough sleep and relaxation, it will affect your immune system and cause you to get sick, and that will cause you even more stress.

If you find it difficult to rest, know that many of us face the same struggle. Make adjustments little by little, like going to bed earlier or setting boundaries with work time. Your mind and body will thank you for it!
